Darwen Receives Funding For Transformation on the Town

Feb, 1 2021

People go to great lengths to improve their looks and appearance. They spend so much money in the hope that the ‘new you’ is so much better than the previous version.

On a more positive note, serious investment has gone into future changes for the town of Darwen, near Blackburn Lancashire. Instead of a disappointing outcome this transformation will really enhance the  town now and for future generations to come.

A bid of £25 million to help revamp Darwen has been submitted. This radical shift means work will be done on the town’s Victorian market and finalisation on a series of housing sites.

Darwen is just one of the town’s bidding for a share of the government’s £3.6 billion Town Deal fund to support regeneration projects and create jobs.

The bid incorporates plans to do the following:-
  • Restore the market
  • Create a new food hall and makers market
  • Funding for Darwen Library and Library Theatre
  • Improvements to pathways through the town’s parks and woods
  • Investment in ultra fast broadband
Wayne Wild, chairman of Darwen Town Deal Board, described the funding as "a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity".

Councillor Phil Riley, from Blackburn and Darwen Borough Council, gave reassurance to the people of Darwen.

“ We have also worked to develop a plan that will have true impact - a plan that will restore a sense of optimism for residents who have real pride in their home town”.

Many local MP’S would agree that Darwen has been severely neglected with many organisers looking to invest in bigger, neighbouring towns and cities.

The Darwen Town Deal Investment Plan wishes to secure an additional £75 million of private sector and council investment to boost and improvement blueprint for the next decade, the Local Democracy Reporting Service has said.

The board has already secured an initial £750,000 of Town Deal funding to restore the town’s iconic Jubilee Tower and create a new sports village.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think Darwen needs a drastic transformation or should it  maintain the  look and appearance that has made it such an appealing town in the heart of Lancashire?
