Mr. Prickles finds new home following rescue from drain

If you were a child of the 80’s  and 90’s you’ll remember the much loved computer game ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’. He could run at top speed, collect rings and fight bad guys. Sadly, however that image of a hedgehog is far from reality as a recent story revealed.

In the small town of Grimsargh near Preston a woman noticed a baby hedgehog immersed in a drain. She initially thought it had drowned, but she noticed bubbles from the hoglet’s nose so she drained the water until help arrived.

The RSPCA came to the  rescue who helped retrieve it from the drain. Thankfully, the five week old hedgehog survived the drama thanks to a pole. He is now commonly known as Mr. Prickles.

Emma Dingley from the RSPCA expressed these words following the rescue,

"He was really lucky to survive as the water was up to his mouth so it is fortunate he was spotted or he would have drowned. I think he must have been out with his mother and the rest of her litter at night when he fell down the drain as he was too young to be out on his own."

Once he was given a thorough check up  the vet approved of his  health which found him severely  cold. Upon finding the hedgehog he was sneezing and shivering so essential warmth in the way of blankets and hot water bottles were provided to cease the shaking.

Following an evening with the inspector on Thursday, the little creature was taken to the Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich  where it will remain until it is old enough to be released back into the wild.

A baby hedgehog was "lucky to survive" after being plucked from a drain with water up to its mouth, said the RSPCA.
