Preston Photographer Capturing Historic Time in the North West

Preston Photographer Capturing Historic Time in the North West

May, 8 2020

Whether we like it or not recent events mean that we have experienced an historic period that, following the political upheaval in the last four years has somehow brought our country together.

Now, in light of the corona virus pandemic a Preston based photographer wants to capture the images which reflect the individual impact the virus has had on our lives.

‘Proud Preston People’ project is the brainchild of Garry Cook. Garry is asking interested ones for their thoughts on life under lockdown, and these words will be published alongside the images when the project is complete.

The project has been funded by Preston Cultural Framework Board and backed by the following organisations:-
Brewtime Collective
Curious Minds
Preston City Council
UCLAN

Social distancing rules will be in place which will see Garry travel by bike to an outdoor location or the person’s home to photograph them.

Garry speaks of the significance of the project and what he requires for those that wish to participate,

“I think this project will be really important as it will capture people and their thoughts at a truly unique time in their history. I will ask the people I photograph how they are feeling, but their statements can be about anything – a message, a promise or what they think about coronavirus.”

A free digital copy to all participants photographed will be sent directly to them and Garry is keen to get the images exhibited across the city’s local independent venues once the lockdown is lifted.

These could take the form of :-
Pubs
Hairdressers
Cafes
Shop windows

In addition, Garry is aiming to produce images that reflect Preston’s diverse population and communities. He concludes with these encouraging words of persuasiveness,

“As well as wanting people representing every faith group and nationality in the city, I would love to include someone reading this now and thinking, ‘I’ve never done anything like this before’. You are exactly the person I want to include in the project. I’ll jump on my bike, cycle to your house and photograph you.”

If you would like to take part, email Garry Cook at gazcook@googlemail.com or call him on 07976 579522.

A Preston-based photographer is looking for subjects for a portrait project that will document the impact coronavirus has had on local lives.
