Dr. Albert van der Waag received his MD and specialized in family medicine in 1975 from Erasmus University, Rotterdam Medical School in The Netherlands. 
 
He started his medical career in 1975 as chief medical officer with the Save the Children Fund (U.K.) in Bangladesh, where he also had worked during his medical studies in 1971 after the Liberation War. In Bangladesh he obtained experiences with the Mother and Child Health Care Programs, Public Health and emergency medicine.
 
In 1977 Dr. van der Waag was appointed Government’s Physician on the island of Saba and later that year on St. Eustatius, Netherlands Antilles, where he was the sole medical practitioner for the island (with a population of 2000) for two years.

Then he became the Public Health Inspector for two years on the three islands of the Windward Islands of the Netherlands Antilles (Saba, Sint Eustatius and Sint Maarten).
 
Dr. van der Waag has been engaged in general practice on the island of St. Maarten since 1979 in the Mullet Bay Medical Center, an outpatient clinic with its own pharmacy, laboratory, aviation medicine and industrial medicine office. 
 
He was the head of the Blood bank, Commander of the Red Cross, Chief Medical Officer for the airport and the president of the Windward Island Medical Association and the Family Planning Association for many years.
 
He joined the AUC faculty in 1996 to assist in providing the Introduction to Clinical Medicine course and with practical patient experience, as a part time teacher.
 
In January 2005 dr. van der Waag joined AUC full time and is a Professor with the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Department.
 
Since 2006 he also became in charge of the CPR BLS courses for Health Care professionals, the coordinator for the professional patients, coordinator for health related  seminars at AUC and is always ready to assist the students in preparing to become better medical doctors at the AUC.
