Five Museum Axe Six Month Extension

Five Museum Axe Six Month Extension

Mar, 29 2016

~It’s true to say that museums play an important part in our lives. They teach us about history and help us to appreciate our own personals lives when we learn about the past and how civilians were so hard done by.

Museums can educate children and can be an escapism from the daily grind we all experience. Sadly, in 2016 museums are under threat across Lancashire and are facing the damaging affect  of extinction, much like the dinosaurs from prehistoric times.

A total of five museums in all are facing the axe, due in part to the struggling economic climate  that is crushing  these essential buildings.

The five under threat are :-

* The Museum of Lancashire
* Fleetwood Museum
*Helmshore Mills
* Queen Street Mill
* The Judges’ Lodgings, Lancaster

County Council Marcus Johnstone, cabinet member for environment, planning and cultural services expressed these words of sadness following this report and the importance of such institutions in the public domain,

“ We took the decision to cease funding these five museums with very heavy hearts. We recognise their immense cultural and historical value but when it is unclear how we will pay for essential services for the vulnerable in just two years’ time, it is one of many difficult decisions we have had to make”.

The good news is this the aforementioned museums have been allowed an extension. Over much debate and discussions, Lancashire County Council have agreed the five museums can stay open till the end of September 2016. This will give an opportunity for other interested parties to come forward.

Please support your local museum whether you live in Preston or Lancaster. It’s vital that these museums remain to provide an enriching learning tool for young children, teenagers and adults. Understanding about our past, perhaps during war time can really impress upon a young person. So do your bit and support these museums. Without the public’s interest they would soon wane and fade out.

Do your part in supporting your museum. It’s in the interest of your children and your children’s children.
