Music greats don’t come round too often but in the shape of musician Ed Sheeran he poses a collective bag of hits which puts him on the same level as long standing artists in a career that he only dreamt of.

Edward Christopher Sheeran was born 17th February 1991 in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. With artistic parents it was inevitable he’d pursue a creative route.

His first foray into music started at just age four in the local church choir. He taught himself the guitar at age 11 and this soon transcended into song-writing. A 2004 school report described him as a “natural performer” and his classmates also voted him “most likely to be famous”.

He did some theatre work as a teenager and became patron of Youth Music Theatre UK (now renamed British Youth Music Theatre) and of Access to Music where he studied Artist Development.

Just under 20 years ago was the onset of his recording music career. Following a series of opening gigs his intuition guided Sheeran into studying music at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford Surrey as an undergraduate at the age of 18,but left without permission in the same year to support hip-hop artist Just Jack.

This rebellious conflict with education made Ed realise his full potential. He didn’t need a course he was already a gifted musician and contemporary song-writer. Hence his response was the 2009 EP ‘You Need Me’ a modern day rap song with slick guitar production.

Ed Sheeran fuses influences ranging from Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Elton John and Van Morrison. But he also isn’t afraid of darker music such as Slipnot and the rap artist Eminem. Lyrically, he can tell a story like Dylan yet he can rap a song like Eminem.

Although what stands out more predominantly for Sheeran is his clever technical use with a loop pedal. Live, he can blend in a range of music using the loop pedal and he is an original artist, delivering a cool acoustic pop sound that sound unique to his contemporaries.

In 2025, Sheeran remains a formidable best- selling artist and he continues to set the world alight with his incredible live shows.
