Aug, 14 2024
When people think of Blackpool their immediate thought conjures up images of the tower, the pleasure beach and the illuminations. But the piers, notably the north pier,is very much a building of distinction.
Please watch this 5 minute film to discover the history of the North Pier and don’t feel obliged to follow the instructions at the end –
Other notable facts from the last century include an arcade pavilion in 1903 which was included at the entrance to the pier and contained a wide range of amusements to suit all tastes.
In 1936, a pleasure steamer returning from Llandudno crashed into the pier. The collision left a 10 feet (3.0 m) gap, and stranded a number of people at the far end.
Thankfully, the pier was restored and everyone was safe. To capture events from the previous century, a heritage room with photographs was opened up, the foyer entrance was refurbished and a disabled lift added. Previously live organists would entertain the public by 2005 this ceased to continue. However, by 2013 the live organist would reintroduced into the sun lounge.
The organist reflects just a small portion of the entertainment made for the interested public. To find out the latest what’s on guide simply visit the following website link – https://www.blackpoolpiers.co.uk/north-pier/
The North Pier is one of the few remaining examples of Birch's classic pier architecture and is a Grade II Listed building, the only Blackpool pier to hold that status. It was recognised as "Pier of the Year" in 2004 by the National Piers Society.
For the past 20 years it has remained a cultural landmark in the town of Blackpool. It’s a fantastic tourist attraction and walking down the pier on a summer’s evening, taking in the coastal scene is an amazing sight. Visitors and locals frequent the pier every day of the year, taking photographs and enjoying the acts on show.
It’s one of the most captivating piers in Blackpool designed for all.
