Charity football match for the extraordinary young man

Charity football match for the extraordinary young man

How we react to a life cut short shows the depth of our care and compassion.

On May 11th nine year old Jordan Banks was enjoying his usual session of football coaching. The weather though was particularly bad and bouts of lightening threatened to dampen Jordan’s tuition.

His family and friends feared the worst.

Prior to Jordan’s untimely death he ran 30 miles in 10 days in honour of his Uncle. He managed to raise £3,000 for a mental health charity.

It seems ironic that the boy who gave so much is no longer with us and footballers are now raising funds for the gifted boy.

On Saturday a charity football match was organised in Blackpool, Jordan’s hometown. His father and stepfather were affectionately applauded on to the pitch before kick off. The funds will go to two local charities Blue Skies and Brian House.

Former England footballer Trevor Sinclair participated in the match and said it ‘was a good way to celebrate his life’.

Match organiser Daz Meehan said he wanted the annual Blue Skies football tournament - already planned before Jordan's death - to also honour the local youngster.

He added it was "a great touch" that his family asked for funds to be shared with Brian House.

Jordan played for Clifton Rangers Junior Football Club, which previously described him as "an extraordinary young man".

It seems fitting then that following his death a sum total of £12,000 was raised to create a permanent memorial to him.

Jordan was a bright young boy who loyally stuck with Liverpool football club throughout his short life. In response to his death, Liverpool players wore shirts bearing his name ahead of their clash with Manchester United.

Sunday league footballers from more than 80 teams also held a minute’s silence.
