A young man playing maracas and dancing on stage to his heart’s content. It’ll never work, they’ll say. They’ll never pull it off. Complete mockery. One hit wonders. The man will disappear out of the spotlight. Wrong!

Bolton born Mark Berry is best known as the maraca player, dancer, and de facto mascot of rock band Happy Mondays, having been invited by lead singer Shaun Ryder shortly after the band was formed. He is chiefly remembered for his bizarre style of dancing and use of maracas.

His stage name became simply Bez. Here he is with the Mondays performing Step On in a 1990 edition of Top of the Pops presented by Anthea Turner -

A more mature Mark can be seen discussing candidly his life on Friday 14th April 2023 at the Darwen Library Theatre from 7.30pm.
