When Rose Ayling – Ellis won Strictly Come Dancing in 2021 with Giovanni Pernice it was a ground-breaking moment. Never before had a deaf person competed in the contest and this broke down barriers for families with deaf children as she brought it to the forefront of our minds and gave those deaf people a voice amidst a quiet world.

But it’s not all glitz and glamour that Strictly likes to portray. The tough reality for families with deaf children sees them having ongoing battles with social services and when language is an additional issue it can create problems with communication.

Directed by Ana Rocha ‘Listen’ is showing today from 4pm then 12th – 16th June 2022.

The film is set in London and focuses on a Portuguese family just getting by. It highlights how difficulties can surface at school with a deaf person and how social services intervene in such a matter.

There is also a short film screening ‘Hair Uncovered’ about Deaf Iranian artist Maral Mamaghani.

If Rose can change perceptions of deaf people in dancing then this film will see the stark realisation of how foreign families deal with the pressure of school life and how local authorities can protect them.
