Lucy McKenzie

Lucy McKenzie

Dates: 28 Jan 2022 - 13 Mar 2022

Location: The Tate - Liverpool

Have you ever looked at the classic Mona Lisa painting by artist Leonardo Da Vinci and felt deceived? For years after it was painted art fans felt cheated or worse thought it was a fake. The painting though is 100% genuine but a more contemporary artist deals with a different kind of deception.

Glasgow born, Brussels - based artist Lucy McKenzie is widely recognised for her use of the trompe l’oeil technique - a skill where paintings are so convincingly real they literally ‘deceive the eye’. For example, Quodlibet Xlll (Janette Murray) 2010 you’ll notice the pin board, with attached map, knitting pattern and wool is in fact, a painting.

Currently showing at The Tate Liverpool is an exhibtion of Lucy’s work which runs until 13th March 2022.

The exhibtion will highlight the fascinating areas of inspiration McKensize has drawn from  throughout the last 25 years. These include the following subjects:-
  • The iconography of international sport
  • The representation of women
  • Gender politics
  • Music subcultures
  • Post - war muralism

McKenzie is also known for her collaborative work. It’s these collaborative projects that sees her strive to challenge the notion of authorship by pointing to the strength of collective actions.

Clearly a very original artist that has sees her derive a considerable amount of her work from the observations she encompasses into the embodiment of her creative passions.
