Turner Exhibited : Ambition and Reputation

Turner Exhibited : Ambition and Reputation

Dates: 31 Dec 2021 - 30 Jan 2022

Location: The Tate - Liverpool

In his working life JMW Turner was able to draw on the classical and biblical narratives of painters such as Titian, Poussin, Rembrandt and Claude Lorrain.

As time progressed Turner  developed his own unique interpretation as he handled the powerful usage of light and colour in his work. Conservative critics were dumbfounded by his u-bend from contemporary taste.

In the early 19th Century Turner’s gallery comprised of more personal and experimental creations as a well as pictures unsold or reserved for his bequest. His paintings and watercolours could also be seen in the private houses and galleries of patrons and collectors. Occasionally, he exhibited abroad.

Currently showing at The Tate in Liverpool - ‘Turner Exhibited : Ambition and Reputation”. The exhibition is located on the main floor - clore gallery. It runs until 30th January 2022. Admission is free just come with a curious eye for Turner’s work.

The central room will reveal the works Turner painted for exhibitions and other displays. A large percentage were displayed at The Royal Academy from 1790 - 1850.  This was a consecutive art exposure in which he presented a wide variety of subjects as he constantly evolved his style.

Whilst collectors and critics came in droves to the Academy, on Varnishing Days, when pictures were finished before the exhibition opened, Turner cleverly upstaged his artistic colleagues by his technical virtuosity.
