Communities Of Change

Dates: 25 Jun 2019 - 25 Jun 2019

Location: UCLan

As part of our seminar series, ‘Communities of Change’, the Centre for Citizenship and Community is pleased to invite you to our sixth event being held on Wednesday 26th June  2019 at 4pm – 5.30pm in Brook Building room BB008 entitled ‘Cultivating Citizenship through Connected Communities: Challenging Intergenerational Loneliness through Youth Led Co-Production’, which will explore Connected Communities projects involving children and young people in West Cumbria.

Seminars have taken place monthly from January to July 2019 at 4pm-5:30 pm in various venues around campus.  Please note the final seminar date in the series this academic year for your diary:

In this seminar, Suzanne Wilson and Emma Williamson will discuss the reflective recruitment and retention strategies adopted with children and young people to involve them in Connected Communities research projects, and the resultant formation of a community youth council in one community and a ‘Connected Communities Curriculum’ in the other. They will discuss how involvement increased young people’s self-confidence, citizenship and community consciousness, and the unanticipated social action projects - litter picks, fundraising and a film awareness campaign- that evolved and were driven by the young people. An overview of the results generated from the community research will be presented, which identified older people and people with long term health conditions as being the most socially isolated. The subsequent interventions that were co-produced with the young people and Age UK West Cumbria provide vibrant examples of how intergenerational interventions can broaden social networks
