Refugee Week

Refugee Week

Dates: 21 Jun 2019 - 16 Jun 2019

Location: UCLan

UCLan are delighted to inform about the Refugee Week celebrations at UCLan (Preston campus) and in the community.

Refugee Week takes place every year across the world. In the UK, Refugee Week is a nationwide programme of arts, cultural and educational events that celebrate the contribution of refugees to the UK and encourages a better understanding between communities.

UCLan, alongside many other organisations including Preston Black History group and Preston City of Sanctuary, are hosting a range of free activities to promote and celebrate Refugee week. There are workshops, film screenings, lectures, art exhibitions, craft markets and poetry.

You can find out more about the experiences of forced migrants, in a talk from a representative of the British Red Cross. Lecturer Robert Walley will deliver a live video call directly from the refugee camp in the Lesvos island. Find out about the project he and his students are involved with.  There will be a free film screening of Human Flow, an epic film journey led by the internationally renowned artist Ai Weiwei.

Amnesty International will deliver workshops on the Human Rights campaigns ‘Brave’ and ‘I Welcome’. In addition, UCLan lecturers Dr Raphael Hoermann and David Knight are running sessions on Windrush history, Black identity and the stories told by this generation of migrant workers who moved  from the Caribbean to Britain.

These events provide an insight into the personal stories and impacts of migration  and displacement.

Please come along and show your support - find out about the full programme of events and book your place via Eventbrite.
