The Color Purple

Nearly 40 years ago a film adaptation based on a 1982 novel by Alice Walker was released in cinemas. Throughout the filmmaking process director Steven Spielberg and producer Quincy Jones gave this first interpretation of a stage musical classic.

Now in 2024 it’s been given a modern makeover with both Spielberg and Jones returning to their roles as well as Oprah Winfrey who starred in the original as producer alongside Scott Sanders.

‘The Color Purple’ is about to be experienced again. It tells the story of Celie, an African American woman living in the American South during the early 1900s.

It boasts a super cool soundtrack, featuring artists such as Alicia Keys, Usher and Mary J. Blige.

Spielberg revisits the story yet creates a unique vision which allows this version to stand on it’s own compared to the 1985 original.
