Next Goal Wins

30 years ago an American sports comedy film was released which was loosely based on the debut of the Jamaican national bobsleigh team at the 1988 Winter Olympics.

‘Cool Runnings’ was at first seen as a joke from their sports contemporaries, thinking that a Jamaican team would have no chance of either competing or even winning. Yet as the film progressed the team got stronger and saw their determination to win.

It was a major hit at the box office in 1993 and some three decades later is still talked about as being revolutionary for it’s time and gave Jamaica a piece of prominence for a while.

Now in 2023, a similar concept film is being released which was also based on a true story. Directed by Taiki Waititi, ‘Next Goal Wins’ sees a series of footballing underdogs who are a laughing stock to their nation.

Yet like ‘Cool Runnings’, through humiliation comes defiance and talent as this football team become the unlikely talk of the crowd.
