Transmission - The Sound of Joy Division

Location: The Continental Pub - South Meadow Lane - Preston

In 1976 English post punk band Joy Division was formed. The group consisted of guitarist/keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris.

But it was vocalist, guitarist and lyricist Ian Curtis that had their fans transfixed on  during their short but successful reign in music.

Curtis suffered from a variety of personal and health issues which ultimately led to his unfortunate demise – death by suicide.

It called time for the band in 1980 yet their second and final album ‘Closer’ released two months later had their iconic classic single ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. It became an anthem to many in the early part of that decade and remained the bands biggest hit to date.

Following the demise of Joy Division the remaining members regrouped under the name New Order. They went on to have a successful period in the music charts combining post punk with electronic and dance music influences.

In 2023, both Joy Division and New Order were nominated as one act for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
