Job: Freelance photographer

Living: South Lancashire

Ian Smith was born in Manchester, the same year as the NHS, 1948, an organisation that he has a lot to be grateful for.

Married for over 50 years with a son and daughter along with 3 grandchildren, Ian brings a lot of life’s experiences to his photography. Military service, retail management and B to B selling has taught Ian a lot about people. An attribute that is so important when directing his shoots.

Ian’s philosophy is very much, ‘keep it simple’. Let the photograph do the ‘talking’.

Ian can truly be seen as an activist with his camera. Campaigning for men to have greater awareness, and perception of prostate cancer. He wants to reduce the ‘miss’ information, anxiety and fear of presenting to health care professionals, for fear of the unknown.

In the summer of 2018, Ian graduated with a 1st Class Degree in Photography B A, from the University of Bolton. The corner stone of his success centred around his photographic project, ‘Prostate cancer: Every Picture Tell a Story.’ This exhibition has been on continuous display since June 2018, with measurable success (currently showing in Lancaster LRI).

Ian has created publications ‘Landscapes and Structure’ and ‘Manchester’, inspired by the ‘Northern Power House’ slogan.

Looking back at some of Ian’s earlier work it is easy to see the influences of Paul Strand with his close cropping style and abstract genres and John Davies a great English landscape photographer.

Ian wants to continue his personal development with new challenges that wash away prejudices, reduce isolation and offer equality to all sections of the community.

When not caressing his Nikon camera Ian spends a lot of time at his place on Anglesey with his wife & their dog.

Remember, It’s not just about the camera!
