Bio :

Dr Myers is a Consultant Clinical Biochemist, and Laboratory Director of Clinical Biochemistry, at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Preston, UK.  After 14 years as Clinical Director for Pathology he became the Associate Divisional Medical Director for Pathology. Dr Myers is also the Lead Scientist for the Trust and chairs the Trust Point of Care Committee.

His scientific and clinical interests overlap in the use of automation, point of care testing and informatics to improve the quality, productivity and clinical effectiveness of the diagnostic process. This spans pathology delivery using state of the art robotics and advanced technology in centralised Hubs through to the use of point of care devices and “Lab in a Box” in multiple locations.  The “Laboratory Anywhere” concept, delivering diagnostics along the continuum from the Specialist Hub to Diagnostics at Home, ensures that patient-focussed diagnostics can support, and enable, innovation in patient care.

He is a Trustee of the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing, where diagnostics (and other health services) are delivered to the BAME communities, and other vulnerable and hard to reach communities, through its Health Melas. He worked with the NHS England Chief Scientific Officer’s team on the delivery of point of care diagnostics to patients with Learning Difficulties and patients experiencing Mental Health issues as part of a strategy to reduce diagnostic overshadowing in vulnerable groups. He is expanding this model to other groups ensuring that access to diagnostics is not a barrier to healthcare.

Dr Myers has recently been appointed Senior Clinical Advisor for Pathology in the NHS Improvement Getting It Right First Time Programme (GiRFT) for Pathology, where improvements to service delivery and quality will be identified after reviewing unwarranted variation in the use and delivery of the Pathology service.

In 2014 Dr Myers was appointed MBE for Services to Healthcare Science, and in 2018 he was awarded the Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine Foundation Lecture Award on Increasing access and equity in laboratory diagnostics.
