~Sometimes things work biennially and sadly some things don’t.  If your looking for something with a little more class and sophistication than the Manchester International Festival, could be right up your street, well, if you happen to live in Manchester that is.

Here is a brief history of the festival and how it has grown over a 12 year period.

It began in 2005 with the pioneering Gorillaz :- Demon Days Live. The following four festivals included monkey theatre, legendary electronic groups, a late comic icon and the lost spaces of Manchester. It’s most recent event, 2015,  featured children’s entertainer Mr. Tumble to add to it’s eclectic mix.

Now in 2017 it’s even bigger and better. Taking place between 29th June - 16th July it aims to wow the people of Manchester for another thrilling 18 day spectacular.

Here is a brief overview of what you can expect this year :-

* Cotton Panic! :- Created by Jane Horrocks, Nick Vivian and Wrangler
Tells the story of the catastrophe that befell the North and its people, all thanks to events that took place thousands of miles away.

* Available Light :- Music by John Adams.
Brings together three giants of postwar American culture: choreographer Lucinda Childs, composer John Adams and architect Frank Gehry. This new production takes the trio’s brilliant collaboration, first staged in 1983, to a new generation of audiences.

* Party Skills for the End of the World :- Created by Nigel Barrett and
Louise Mari with Abigail Conway

* Dark Matter :- Curated by Mary Anne Hobbs
Dark Matter is eight immersive shows from pioneering national, international and Manchester-based musicians

*Fatherland :- Co-created by Scott Graham, Karl Hyde and Simon Stephens
Fatherland is a bold, ambitious show about contemporary fatherhood in all its complexities and contradictions

* True Faith :- Curated by Matthew Higgs and Jon Savage
True Faith explores the ongoing significance and legacy of New Order and Joy Division through the wealth of visual art their music has inspired.

* Last and First Men :-A film and live score by Jóhann Jóhannsson
an extraordinary new multimedia work by Oscar-nominated Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (Arrival, Sicario, Blade Runner 2049). Last and First Men combines music, film and Tilda Swinton’s elegiac narration into a poetic meditation on memory, loss and the idea of Utopia

* The Welcoming Party :- Theatre-Rites
A beautiful blend of puppetry, performance, dance and live music for both children and family audiences.
