~Many would agree that Preston is a multi-cultural city. A vast mix of people make up it’s growing population. From the commuters at the bus and train station to the students who frequent the University for lectures and course assignments. It would be beneficial then to have a group that studied the concept of language and key subjects to be discussed in a relaxed and friendly environment.

The Preston Linguistics Circle is a regular meeting of researchers interested in language, based in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Central Lancashire.

It’s an important meeting to attend as you will receive vital research analysis  on matters that affect our current world climate by  UCLAN staff or external guests. Plus you’ll also get the chance to meet like minded individuals who share your academic pursuits providing constructive feedback on your work.

Here is the schedule from 8th February - 22nd March 2018 :-

Thursday 08 February 2018, 14:00-16:00, LH123 (Livesey House) Jiayi Wang (Lecturer and Subject Leader for Chinese, UCLan) Absence and silence in Chinese smog discourses

Thursday 22 February 2018, 14:00-16:00, HA135 (Harrington Building) Costas Gabrielatos (Senior Lecturer in English Language, Edge Hill University) Keyness analysis

Thursday 08 March 2018, 14:00-16:00, LH123 (Livesey House) Neil Foxlee (Former Senior Research Fellow, UCLan) Trump's populist rhetoric

Thursday 22 March 2018, 14:00-16:00, LH123 (Livesey House) Candice Satchwell (Reader in Education & Literacies, UCLan) Collaborative writing with disadvantaged young people: questions of authorship and agency

How to get there: Livesey House is a 5-minute walk from Preston Station, on Corporation Street. It’s the first campus building you will encounter as you come from the station (blue zone on campus map). Harrington Building (purple zone) is a 10-minute walk from the station, further inside the campus, on Adelphi Street, past the UCLan Library.

The PLC is open to undergraduate/ postgraduate students and established researchers from all universities. All welcome!

Whether you’re a first year, a second year or in your final exams, am sure you will greatly benefit from attending these sessions. An interest in language is essential as well as  an awareness of the world around you for you to really take something home from each and every time you attend.
