~With the current schedule of television viewing being dominated by Saturday night talent shows  an opportunity to see some culturally based entertainment  is a real need and an essential outlet if your craving something a little more sophisticated than a Viennese waltz.

Look no further than ‘Preston Arts Festival Film Week’.  The week has been designed to feature classics of the arts genre with some excellent acting and several accomplished directors.

Now already in day 2 having shown the 1968 classic Song of Summer last night, tonight’s feature ( Tuesday 3rd October) is another one from the late Ken Russell, taking us back four decades to 1970’s  ‘ The Music Lovers’ :- Tchaikovsky struggles with his homosexuality by marrying, but chooses a nymphomaniac he cannot satisfy. Starring Richard Chamberlain as Tchaikovsky and Glenda Jackson as Nina.

Wednesday nights film ( 4th October ) is the 2011 documentary led ‘ In the Bleak Mid Winter’. This factually based feature explores the life of Holst. Directed by Tony Palmer and featuring contributions from Katherine Jenkins, Kiri Te Kanawa and Russell Watson.

Thursday ( 5th October ) sees  the tragic story of Jacqueline du Pre portrayed  from  the perspective of her sister Hilary du Pre Finzi in the 1998 film Hilary and Jackie. Directed by Anand Tucker and starring Emily Watson and Rachel Griffiths in the lead roles.

Finally on the Friday evening ( 6th October ) is the French film with English sub-titles ‘Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky’. This 2009 masterpiece is directed  Jan Kounen and  captures the relationship between Stravinsky and Chanel after the disastrous premiere of The Rite of Spring in Paris in 1913. Starring Mads Mikkelsen as Stravinsky and Anna Mouglalis as Chanel.

All screenings will be shown at the  Mitchell & Kenyon Cinema in the Foster Building UCLAN from  7.00pm. Admission is free with a retiring collection in aid of festival funds.
