~Women in the spotlight have recently seen their profile undermined and undervalued. The Harvey Weinstein scandal has meant women in film have taken a bolder stride to represent this empowering and resilient gender. In the south of England women have been neglected when it comes to equal pay even leading  men to take pay cuts as a loyal act of solidarity for their work colleagues.

This isn’t anything new. It took a considerable time prior to 1918 for women to be able to vote and now in 2018 events up and down the country are marking this pivotal year.

Thursday March 8th is International Women’s Day and UCLAN have prepared something extra special in honour of the 1918 revolutionary change in politics.

Simply titled, ‘ 100 Year of (Non) Equality: A Conference Post-Suffrage Women's Rights’. In association with the Lancashire Law School this conference will consider various  aspects of women’s rights in the century. These are outlined in the following six categories :-

Women coping with disability
Women living with HIV
Women in sport
Honour violence
Domestic violence & employment
Gender issues in literature

There will also be an opportunity to hear from Barbara Gorna - UCLan Law School alumnus and noted writer, film-maker and political activist. She will speak about her passion for research into the suffragist movement, buying the sash Emily Davison tried to attach to the King's horse in the 1913 Epsom Derby, and the memorabilia she has collected.

It will commence from 9.30am - 4pm in the afternoon and will be located at University of Central Lancashire, Conference Room, Adelphi Building, Preston Campus.
